Well here we are at the end of our story about Jonas, Gabe, Asher, the Giver, all these characters I hope you have grown to love just a little. The text below is an excerpt from an interview with the author Lois Lowry about the ending of the story. Read it first and then respond to the questions asked.
Interview excerpt:
Question: Do Jonas and Gabe die at the end of the story?
Author's Answer: "I don't want to put my own feelings into it, my own beliefs, and ruin that for people who create their own endings in their minds. I will say that I find it an optimistic ending...so I'm always kind of surprised and disappointed when some people tell me they think that the boy and the baby just die. I don't think they die. What form their new life takes is something I like for people to figure out for themselves...I think they're out there somewhere and I think that their life has changed and their life is happy and I would like to think that's true for the people they left behind as well."
Questions to respond to:
1) What do you think happened to Jonas and Gabe? The author says she doesn't think that they die, do you agree with her?
2) As the book ends Jonas hears music and singing as he and Gabe race down the hill on the sled. Do you believe he really hears those things or is he imagining them?
3) If you could ask one good question of the author of The Giver, what would you ask her?
Make sure you answer ALL 3 QUESTIONS! I look forward to hearing your responses and I hope you enjoyed the book.
1-1
ReplyDelete1-1: I think there was a town that they reached. Just before they died the town folk cared for him just before he desended and he lived with them when he healed.
Delete1-2: I don't think he died.
2-1: I think he imagined it because the thing he wanted most was to hear music so his soul granted his wish.
3-1: I would ask ",If Jonas and Gabe made it to a town do you think they would like it there?
Bret, I wondered the same thing about the new town. What if they don't like it in the new place they have made it to? Would someone from the old Community come looking for them or try to take them back home? Would his parents miss him and think about him or is that too close to having a feeling? What would a new town be like, would they welcome strangers? What if it wasn't a welcoming new place with caring people? Sometimes the unknown is scarier than the life you are already living.
Deletebret, I think your very imaginative.
DeleteI think Jonas died. I think that because he was hoping and praying for music and love he Heard then=m when he was going unconsies and if do that in the snow you are likely to die.
ReplyDeleteIf I could ask the author i would ask When and how did the old Comunitty get formed
Luke, we think alike in a lot of ways, especially here with this story. I assumed that the characters must have died for the same reasons you suggested, when people have been exposed to the elements for too long they may hallucinate and imagine seeing or hearing things that are comforting to them especially in the cold. Do you think that the idea of music and love being the last ideas he had are common to human beings or unique to Jonas?
DeleteLuke I have to agree with you it is likely that he died but have you thought this all the way from the heart not the brain.
Delete1 i dont think they die because i think they found elswere (or somewere els) because he saw lights and music so it must be a a town
ReplyDelete2 i think hes hearing it because again it could be a town (elswere)
3 i would ask "did jounas and gabe make it or not, if he did it would be good, if he didnt it would be bad".
Brenden, I thought they must have died before I read that interview with the author. Then I started to think that maybe there was an alternative ending to the story.
DeleteBrenden,I like your way of thinking.
Delete1.i think that jonas and gabe do not die because jonas has all those memorys.
ReplyDelete2.i think that the muisc is not his imagination because gabe mint have herd it.
3.will you make an sequal.
Hayden, I feel like you, I want there to be a sequel to the story, but there isn't, just the companion texts we have discussed. Not sure if there is an order that they should be read in but they definitely go together.
DeleteHayden, good job but what if he ran out of memory's
DeleteThese are all GREAT questions guys, I can tell you really thought about the story and what was happening. I would have so many questions for Lois Lowry if I could meet her.
ReplyDeleteFirst I think Jonas and Gabe did not but go Elsewhere. Second I think the giver died and he gave Jonas music. Last my question is if Jonas died who is th next giver.
ReplyDeleteDamien, I think your being negative.
